HOW TO MAKE AN EASY, QUICK HOMEMADE VEGAN TORTILLAS RECIPE?
These homemade tortillas contain simple ingredients like flour, salt, water, and vegetable oil. This is an easy recipe and affordable, too. Making your own tortillas is undoubtedly rewarding, and they taste much better than store-bought tortillas.
SEASONINGS FOR TORTILLA DOUGH
Seasoning this homemade tortilla recipe is straightforward. It is made with basic ingredients, and you will mainly need salt. For this easy recipe I used Himalayan salt, but you can also use other types of salt, such as fine sea salt, kosher salt, and fine Celtic salt. In addition to these types of Salt that you can try, if you wish to give your recipe a garlicky flavor, you can also try garlic salt.
Although just adding salt will give a nice flavor, if you want to add more seasonings to this great recipe, here you can get a few ideas to season and other flavors and colors to the tortillas.
- Paprika and smoked paprika.
- Garlic powder.
- Onion powder.
- Black pepper.
- Dried herbs; such as parsley and oregano.
INGREDIENTS FOR TORTILLAS
To make these homemade vegan tortillas you will need four main ingredients: flour, water, salt, and oil. Some tortilla recipes are made with animal products, such as animal fat. To make this recipe vegan I replaced this ingredient with vegetable oil.
The main ingredient for these tortillas is all-purpose flour. If you want to make gluten-free tortillas check the alternative flour and starch you can use.
DRY INGREDIENTS
- Flour: I used all-purpose flour for this recipe, but you can use other types of flour. For example, whole wheat flour to make whole wheat tortillas. To make gluten-free tortillas replace the all-purpose flour with chickpea flour, tapioca flour, gluten-free flour, and tapioca starch. Another option is to make corn tortillas by using corn flour.
- Raising agent: Using baking powder or sodium bicarbonate is optional for this recipe. However, you will find some tortilla recipes that add this ingredient but I prefer my tortillas without adding baking powder.
- Salt: as I mentioned before in the seasoning section, I like to cook with Himalayan salts, which is my preference, but you can also use table salt or fine sea salt.
WET INGREDIENTS
- Oil: I like to use olive oil to make this recipe as it goes well in terms of flavor and texture. If don’t have olive oil at home or prefer to use other vegetable oil (for example to reduce costs) you can also use sunflower oil or coconut oil. Bear in mind that by using these other vegetable oils the flavor and texture of your homemade tortillas might change the recipe.
- Water: you can use tap water to make this recipe, but I prefer to use filtered water with my recipes as I noticed they taste a lot better. Also, is very important the temperature of the water it has to be warm. Therefore, the best way to make this tortilla dough is with warm water.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS AND STORING
It might be obvious how to serve this homemade tortilla; however, this great recipe is very versatile and you can serve it in many different ways; for example:
- Pizza: you can use each tortilla as the base for an individual pizza. You can add tomato sauce, vegan cheese, herbs, vegetables, and any other topping you like when having pizza. Then, place the tortilla pizza in the oven and bake for a few minutes or until the tortilla is crispy.
- Burritos: Use any of your favorite fillings, from the more traditional black beans, rice, etc., to the leftovers you might have at home, and enjoy a quick and easy comfort food.
- Tortilla chips: This is a great way to use homemade tortillas. Spread some oil and seasoning, cut them into triangles (or any shape you like), and bake them in the oven. You can enjoy these tortilla chips with dips and salsas, such as guacamole, tomato salsa, vegan cheese, hummus, etc.
- Quesadillas: you can add delicious vegan cheeses that you can get at the grocery store or try homemade vegan cheeses; such as carrot and potato cheese, vegan cream cheese, vegan parmesan cheese, vegan cheddar sauce, etc.
STORING
To store these homemade tortillas let them cool down at room temperature completely. Place your vegan tortillas into an air-tight container, such as a Ziploc bag, a freezer bag, or a plastic bag. You can also use aluminum foil to wrap them up too.

- On the lightly floured surface, place one dough ball and with a rolling pin give the shape of the tortilla. Don't worry if they are not perfectly round as the dough is elastic so it can shrink back.
- Place the tortilla on one piece of parchment paper and cover with another piece. Continue until you finish with the dough.
COOKING
- Put a non-stick skillet or non-stick pan on the stove at medium-high heat.
- Place the first tortilla on the hot pan (you don't need to add oil for cooking).
- Let the first side cook for a couple of minutes or until you see some brown spots. Then flip the tortilla and cook the other side.
