BANANAS FOSTER CREPES
Traditionally the classic Bananas Foster recipe is from New Orleans and some of the main ingredients are ripe sliced bananas, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and rum. With these ingredients, you can make lovely caramelized bananas to add on top of pancakes, or in this recipe on top of vegan crepes. Although this recipe may seem that it would take loads of time to make, you will be surprised at how easy is to make.
FOR THE FILLING
For these delicious bananas you will mainly need ripe bananas as they are the star of this dessert recipe. However, besides you can add bananas to the filling or topping, you can also add other ingredients that go well with bananas foster. These might not be the ingredients that you see in the classic or traditional recipe, but as I always say here you can take a recipe that you love, personalize it, and make it your own.
- Nuts; such as walnuts, pecan nuts, pistachios, sliced almonds, etc.
- Raisins.
- Raisins soaked in rum.
- Dried prunes.
Additionally, you can not only use this or other ingredients for the filling, but also you can add them when you are making the sauce. Therefore, you can enrich the flavors of the sauce and they will blend well with the banana flavor.
ALTERNATIVE INGREDIENTS
To begin with, one of the main ingredients of this dessert recipe is the regular butter. However, to make this recipe vegan-friendly, I use vegan butter. If this is not an option for you, you can use other alternatives to make the sauce.
- Vegetable oil.
- Coconut oil.
- Margarine.
Although, these options can work well as a replacement, bear in mind that they might give a different flavor to the sauce.
BANANAS FOSTER TOPPINGS
Although I used vegan vanilla ice cream for this bananas foster recipe and sprinkled some cinnamon, you can also use other delicious options to enjoy this dessert. Moreover, you can use these ingredients not only as toppings but also as filling. For example, if you want you can add this bananas foster on a crepe and then roll it up as a cannelloni, you can also use the ingredients listed here.
- Vegan whipped cream.
- Merengue (made of aquafava).
- Vegan sour cream.
- Nuts; such as walnuts, pecan nuts, pistachios, sliced almonds, etc.
- Spices; for example nutmeg.
- Maple syrup.
- Chocolate sauce.
- Dark chocolate chips.
- Powdered sugar.

- 1 Tbsp. of Vegan butter.
- 1 Tsp. of Vanilla extract.
- 2 Large ripe bananas.
- 2 Tbsp. of Brown sugar.
- ½ Tsp. of Ground cinnamon.
- Vegan vanilla ice cream.
Instructions
VEGAN CREPES
- Sieve the flour in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the salt and one teaspoon of sugar (optional) and integrate well.
- Add the oil then, little by little the non-dairy milk, and mix well (if you get any lumps sieve all the mix or use a blender).
- Let the crepe batter refrigerate in the fridge for 30 minutes for better results. The longer the better even you can prepare this in advance the day before (let the batter sit in the fridge overnight).
- Place a nonstick frying pan/skillet (special crepe pan or non-stick pan) on the burner/ring at medium heat. Lightly grease the pan with coconut oil or unsalted vegan butter (around 1 tsp), and swirl the pan to spread the melted vegetable oil/butter. It is recommended to do this step each time you cook a new crepe.
- Pour a thin layer of the crepe batter into the nonstick pan or skillet, swirling the batter to spread it evenly, and carefully flip the crepe when you see that it is cooked. You don't have to be a professional to do this, you can always use a spatula.
- Place the cooked vegan crepes on a plate.
- Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you finish with the remaining batter or you can prepare just a few and leave the crepe mix in the fridge for later.
- If you are making these vegan crepes in advance when they cool down at room temperature cover them with plastic wrap and keep them refrigerated until consumption.
BANANAS FOSTER RECIPE
- Place a skillet on a stove at medium heat.
- Melt the butter and then add brown sugar, and vanilla extract, and gently stir.
- In the meantime, peel the overripe bananas and cut them into slices.
- After the sugar melts add the bananas to the sauce and cook them until light golden brown.
ASSEMBLE
- Place 2 vegan crepes on a large dessert plate (I fold them like triangles).
- Then, add the caramelized bananas on top of the crepes and pour some sauce.
- Sprinkle ground cinnamon to your taste (if you don't like cinnamon you can use other spice or powdered sugar).
- Lastly, add the vegan vanilla ice cream on top of your crepes bananas foster recipe.
- Serve this delicious dessert with a warm drink, such as tea or coffee.
Notes
*Traditionally crepes are made with plain flour, I tried this recipe with self-raising flour and I really like it! If you prefer or have plain flour this recipe would yummy too!
The vegan crepes amount you can get with this recipe can vary depending on how thin crepes you do when making crepes.
