EASY VEGAN APPLE FRITTERS RECIPE WITH GLAZE
This is an easy and simple vegan apple fritters recipe that you can enjoy for breakfast or dessert. These homemade apple fritters have vegan ingredients in comparison to the traditional apple fritter recipes that contain cow’s milk and eggs. However, with this recipe, you can get them crispy on the outside and soft on the inside too.
FLAVORINGS FOR THE APPLE FRITTERS
Traditionally apple fritter recipes contain cinnamon powder or cinnamon sugar mix as apple and cinnamon can be a great and classic combination. However, I don’t like cinnamon in my recipes as I find this ingredient has a too-strong flavor. Therefore, you can personalize this recipe to your taste by adding cinnamon (or not) or trying other aromatic flavoring that you love. Here I listed some flavoring ingredients to give you some inspiration.
- Cinnamon.
- Sea salt.
- Caramel essence.
- Almond extract.
- Citrus zest; for example orange zest and lemon zest.
- Anise.
- Liqour.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE APPLE FRITTERS
I tried to make these homemade sweet treats as easily and simply as possible; therefore, the ingredients I chose should be fairly easy to get and affordable too. In addition to this, I will give ideas and alternative ingredients to the ones I used to make them.
For the apples, I used the medium sizes gala apples. However, you can also use granny smith apples and pink lady apples.
DRY INGREDIENTS
- Flour: I like to use self-raising flour to make many recipes, and these apple fritter fritters are no exception and the result was great. However, you can also all-purpose flour or plain flour and add baking powder or sodium bicarbonate. If you want to make this vegan apple fritter recipe gluten-free you can use: gluten-free flour, oat flour, or almond flour. In addition to this, you can mix these gluten-free flours with starch such as cornstarch.
- Sugar: I used regular sugar, but you can also use: brown sugar, demerara sugar, coconut sugar, or maple syrup.
- Salt: I like Himalayan salts, other salts you can use are: sea salt, kosher salt, or regular table salt.
WET INGREDIENTS
- Plant-based milk: I like to use oat milk if you are making this recipe gluten-free and also want to use oats milk check if is gluten-free. Other plant milk that you can use are: almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, etc.
- Oil: to cook this delicious sweet treat I used vegetable oil, I didn’t put any specific quantity as this can vary depending on how much oil the fritters may absorb. Other vegetable oils you can use to cook these fritters are for example coconut oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil.
- Egg replacement: as an egg replacement I used one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, you can use other egg replacement ingredients such as flax egg, apple sauce, or peanut butter.
COOKING THE APPLE FRITTERS
The cooking method I used was frying this vegan apple fritters as you normally do with the traditional recipe. If you have a deep fryer you can also use it for this recipe and deep frying them.
However, if you want to make this recipe oil-free or at least reduce the amount of oil to make this sweet treat, you can try baking them. For this option, you will need to preheat the oven to 180 °C degrees (356 °F approx.).
On a baking tray or a baking sheet, you can lay out parchment paper and then place the batter with spoons with a separation of around 3 cm from each other. Cook them in the preheated oven from both sides until golden brown.
Lastly, you can also try to make them using an air fryer.
TIPS
- Resting the batter: if you have spare time when you are making this homemade apple fritters or you are making this recipe in advance, for best results let the batter rest for at least half an hour.
- When frying or baking the fritters, do not overcrowd the pan or pot.
- To prevent having soggy fritters, make sure the oil temperature is the right one for frying. You can test this by placing a tiny portion of the batter. Also, smaller fritters cook better, when the outside of the fritter is golden brown from both sides the inside of the fritter should be cooked too.
