EASY VEGAN FORTUNE COOKIE RECIPE | HOMEMADE & DELICIOUS

These homemade fortune cookies are a recipe I’ve wanted to make for a long time. One reason is that they are not always available where I live, and even when I do find them, they can be quite pricey. After conducting some research, I found out that they are made of simple and easy-to-find ingredients, and (pun not intended), the best part is they don’t cost a fortune to make! Win-win!
OTHER FLAVORINGS FOR THE VEGAN FORTUNE COOKIES#
Traditionally, fortune cookies are flavored with vanilla extract, which gives them a subtle yet unique flavor that many of us love. However, you can use other lovely flavoring ingredients to try with this simple and amazing recipe. Furthermore, you can also use more than one of these flavoring ingredients and combine them; for example, vanilla extract and almond extract.
- Almond extract.
- Cinnamon.
- Sea salt.
- Caramel essence.
- Citrus zest, for example, orange zest and lemon zest.
- Anise.
- Liquor.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE VEGAN FORTUNE COOKIES#
This is a simple recipe with easy-to-find and affordable ingredients, so you don’t have to wait for a Chinese New Year celebration or special occasions to make them. Simply review the list below and make these delicious cookies today!
DRY INGREDIENTS#
- Flour: all-purpose flour goes well with this recipe, ideally unbleached. On the other hand, I haven’t tried other types of flour, so I cannot suggest alternatives. If you are making this recipe with a different type of flour, such as gluten-free, tell us how it went in the comment section below!
- Cornstarch: This dry ingredient can be optional; however, I included it in this recipe as it gives a nice texture to the fortune cookies.
- Sugar: I used white sugar to make these great cookies. If you prefer to use an alternative, you can also use coconut sugar, demerara sugar, brown sugar, caster sugar, or powdered sugar. However, using other types of sugar might change the colour or texture of the cookies.
- Salt: I normally use fresh ground Himalayan salt in my recipes; however, you can also use other types, such as sea salt (ground), kosher salt, or regular table salt.

WET INGREDIENTS#
One of the main ingredients that you might find in other fortune cookie recipes is egg whites. As this is a vegan-friendly homemade recipe, I replaced the egg whites with aquafaba, which is an affordable vegan ingredient that is great to use when replacing egg whites.
- Flavoring: I used vanilla extract for this recipe; however, there are other great options to try. For example, almond extract. If you want to explore other flavoring options, check the flavoring section above.
- Aquafava: to replace the egg whites in this recipe, I decided to use aquafaba (which is the water leftover from cooking chickpeas or the water in canned chickpeas). As I was cooking a chickpea curry, I saved the water from the canned chickpeas I used for this other recipe.
COOKING THE FORTUNE COOKIES#
For this recipe, I used an electric fan oven; however, any other electric oven or gas oven can also be used. Here are some tips to help you when baking these cookies.
TIPS#
When cooking fortune cookies is very important to use a non-stick agent to prevent them from sticking to the cookie sheet. Some of the options you can use are:
- Parchment paper.
- Oil.
- Melted butter (vegan) or margarine.
- Silicone mat.
Lastly, cooking these cookies for minutes might not look long enough; however, to be able to fold them into the traditional fortune cookie shape requires the cookie to be soft, otherwise, they can break. After you shape them, you can place them in a muffin tin and put them in the oven (turned off) to get a crispy texture.

EASY VEGAN FORTUNE COOKIE RECIPE
Easy, crispy & fun to make! Perfect for holidays, parties, or DIY gifts, this vegan fortune cookie recipe is a must-try. Great to customize your own messages.
Ingredients
- ½ Cup of Plain flour.
- 1 Tablespoon of Sugar.
- A pinch of salt.
- 1 Tablespoon of Cornstarch.
- 12 Tablespoons of Aquafaba.
- 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla extract.
Instructions
FORTUNE COOKIE BATTER
- In a medium bowl, add all the dry ingredients: plain flour or all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and cornstarch. Mix well.
- Then, add the wet ingredients: aquafaba and vanilla extract, and mix until you get a smooth batter.
COOKING
- Pre-heat the oven to 180 °C degrees (356 °F approx.).
- In a cookie sheet or baking sheet, place a piece of parchment paper, a silicone mat, or spread melted butter or oil on the cookie sheet.
- On the prepared baking sheet, take a tablespoon of batter and, using the back of a spoon, spread it to form a thin circle.
- You can make a first batch to test the oven temperature. Cook this first batch for 5 minutes.
- If you see the edges of the cookie golden brown, they are ready. If you cook them for longer, they might become harder and therefore more difficult to fold.
MAKING THE FORTUNE COOKIES
- Remove the fortune cookies with a spatula.
- Place your personalized messages in the center of the cookie, fold it in half, and then fold it in half again. You can use the lip of a cup or the rim of a glass for this last step for the traditional fortune cookie shape.
- Place the folded fortune cookies in a muffin tin. This can help to keep the shape of the cookies.
- If you want the cookies to be crisper and golden brown, you can place them in the oven again. The oven should be turned off, and you can leave the cookies for around 30 minutes.
FORTUNE MESSAGE
- Cut small strips of paper (you can use white paper or other colours).
- Then, write your personalized messages.
Notes
To store your fortune cookies, place them in an airtight container once the cookies have cooled down at room temperature.
